Phytophthora lateralis is an aggressive fungus-like pathogen that causes extensive
damage mainly to Lawson cypress trees (Chamaecyparis lawsoniana). Lawson
cypress and its numerous colourful varieties are frequently planted for amenity,
and are among the most important conifers in the UK ornamental plant trade. The
pathogen primarily attacks the roots of its hosts, and forms lesions which extend
up into the root collar and stem base. The disease is nearly always fatal and can
have a major impact on trees in woodlands, windbreaks, parkland, private gardens
and nurseries.
